A new roof is one of the biggest investments you'll make in your home. We install new roofs and carry out full re-roofs across Cheshire and the surrounding areas, using high-quality materials and expert craftsmanship so yours is built to last.
When a re-roof makes more sense than a repair
Patch repairs are the right answer far more often than people expect, and we will always tell you when that is the case. But there comes a point where you are paying for the same roof twice.
If you are getting repeated leaks in different places, if the battens underneath have rotted, or if the tiles have started to delaminate and crumble across the whole roof rather than in one spot, repairs stop being economical. At that stage a full strip and re-roof usually costs less over ten years than a rolling series of call-outs.
We are called out to tired roofs right across Cheshire and the surrounding areas, and the housing stock in towns like Crewe, Nantwich, Winsford and Middlewich throws up the same patterns again and again: concrete tiles from the 1960s and 70s reaching the end of their life all at once, and Victorian slate in the older parts of Nantwich and Chester where the nails have finally rusted through. We will tell you honestly which stage yours is at.
What a full re-roof actually involves
We strip the existing covering back to the rafters so we can see what we are dealing with. Anything structural that has failed gets dealt with before the new roof goes on, not covered over. Every roof we fit across Cheshire and the surrounding areas is built to stand up to what a North West winter throws at it.
A breathable membrane goes down over the rafters, then treated battens, then your chosen tile or slate. Ridges, hips and verges are finished with dry-fix systems where appropriate, which means no mortar to crack and drop out in a few winters. Flashings and abutments are re-formed in lead where they meet walls and chimneys.
- Strip the old covering and dispose of the waste
- Inspect and repair rafters, battens and any rot
- Lay breathable membrane and treated battens
- Fit your chosen tile or natural slate
- Dry-fix ridge, hip and verge details
- Re-form lead flashings at walls and stacks
Tile or slate?
Concrete and clay tiles are the most common choice across Cheshire housing stock. They are hard-wearing, come in a wide range of profiles and colours, and suit most pitched roofs.
Natural slate costs more up front and takes longer to lay, but it lasts a very long time and is often the right call on older or period properties, particularly in the older parts of Nantwich, Knutsford and Chester where the local street scene is slate and you want the roof to sit properly alongside its neighbours. We will talk you through what suits your property and your budget rather than pushing one option.
