Behind the photos
How a roof like these goes on
Every finished roof on this page went through the same eight stages. It is worth knowing what they are, because it is the parts you cannot see in the photos that decide whether a roof lasts twenty years or fifty.
Scaffold & access
The scaffold goes up first, with a proper working lift at eaves height and edge protection. It is the only safe way to work and the only way to get a clean finish at the verge.
Stripping the roof
Old tiles, battens and felt come off down to the bare rafters. Everything goes straight into the skip, and sound reclaimable tiles are set aside if we are reusing them.
Checking the timbers
With the roof open we can see the rafters properly. Anything soft, split or rotted at the wall plate gets replaced or sistered before a single new tile goes anywhere near it.
Membrane & battens
A breathable membrane replaces the old bitumen felt, so moisture can escape instead of sitting in the roof space. Treated battens are then gauged to the exact tile being used.
Tiling or slating
Tiles or natural slate are laid to the correct lap and nailed or clipped to the manufacturer’s fixing spec, which on an exposed Cheshire roof usually means more fixings, not fewer.
Ridge, hips & verge
Ridge and hip tiles are bedded or dry-fixed, and the gable gets a dry verge system. These are the details that fail first on an old roof, and the ones worth doing properly.
Leadwork & flashings
Chimneys, abutments and valleys are detailed in proper code lead, not mortar fillets or flashband. Done right, the leadwork will outlast the tiles above it.
Gutters & clean-up
Guttering is checked or replaced, the roof space is left clear, and the drive and garden are magnet-swept for nails before the scaffold comes down.

Good to know
Questions about the work itself
How long does a full re-roof take?
Most standard semi-detached or terraced houses take three to five working days from scaffold to clean-up, and a larger detached or complex hipped roof can run to a week or more. Weather is the main variable, and we will always tell you honestly if rain is going to add a day rather than rushing a roof on.
Do you scaffold every job?
Any full re-roof or slating job is scaffolded, because it is the only safe way to work and the only way to get a proper finish at the eaves and verge. Smaller repairs can often be done from a tower or ladders. Scaffolding is included in the price we quote you, so there is no surprise cost later.
Will you be able to match my existing tiles?
Usually, yes. Concrete interlocking tiles from the major manufacturers are still in production and easy to match, and we keep reclaimed stock for older profiles. Natural slate and handmade clay can be harder, so on a repair we will sometimes lift sound tiles from a less visible elevation and use new ones there instead, which keeps the front of the house looking right.
What happens to all the old roof material?
It goes in our own skip or grab wagon and is taken away as part of the job. Old tiles, battens, felt and nails are all cleared, and we magnet-sweep drives and lawns before we leave. Waste removal is in the quote, not an extra.
Do you work in my town?
We are based in Cheshire and work right across the county and the wider North West, including Chester, Crewe, Nantwich, Northwich, Winsford, Congleton, Sandbach, Middlewich, Macclesfield, Knutsford, Wilmslow, Warrington and Manchester. If you are just outside that, ask anyway, as we travel for the right job.
Can I see a job like mine before I commit?
Ask us. We are usually working somewhere nearby and are happy to point you at a finished roof you can look at from the street, or send over photos of the same tile or the same type of repair. We would rather you felt confident before you book anything.
